Abu Huraira – may God be pleased with him – narrated that the Messenger of God – may God bless him and grant him peace – used to name a female horse a horse. It was included by Abu Dawood in his Sahih, and Shuaib Al-Arna’oot, and Al-Albani said: It is an authentic hadith.
And the horse in the Arabic language is called a male and a female. In the hadith there is evidence for naming a female horse a mare.
Shaddad bin Muawiyah Al-Absi said in his Farsah “Jarwa”:
Don’t you ask my horse to sell it because it is neither sold nor loaned?
We have from its back an impenetrable fortress, and in its steadfastness there is light and fire
So we redeem her, if she comes to us with the shepherds, the skills will follow her
And we save it for the days of misfortune, so that we will be saved if the dust comes out
A skilled calf in a horse transcends as the night transcends the day
It flies with the wind without feathers and never catches dust
