180 km from Cairo, specifically on the island of “Saud”, located on the border of Sharkia Governorate with Ismailia Governorate, Arabs Al-Tahawiya live. The Al-Tahawiyah tribe is considered one of the sub-groups of the Hanadi “Hind bin Salam“.
Al-Tahawiya preserved their authentic Bedouin customs, where they used their horses on rabbit hunting trips, as well as on their long journeys, and were keen to preserve the characteristics of their Bedouin horses, and gave them a complete desert life that did not differ from its counterpart in the Arabian Peninsula.
Since the time of Muhammad Ali and until the July Revolution, the Tahawiyya participated in the conquests and protection of the eastern wars of the Egyptian state. The Tahawiyya were assigned to guard the Levant Road. The Egyptian government made them large fiefs in the Sharkia Governorate, so they turned from a Bedouin life and invasion to stability, and they became major landowners.
Al-Tahawiyah’s life was associated with horses, and they sought to make close links with the tribes of “Anza” and “Shammar”, and they formed close relations with the tribes of the Arabian Peninsula and the Bedouin heritage based on equestrianism. One of the leading breeders of the Egyptian country to send their horses for training at El-Tahawiya; Because their horses achieved great results in the race and were distinguished by their resistance to injuries.
Documenting the Tahawiya horses
The sheikhs of “Al-Tahawiya” were keen to document their horses, so they obtained certificates with the seals of the chief sheikhs of the Jazira and Badia tribes; To prove the lineage of their horses. These testimonies date back to the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century.
The Sheikhs of “Al-Tahawiya” also created notebooks to record their horses in detail, for example: “The notebook of Sheikh Abdullah Saud Al-Tahawy”, which began from 1875 to 1950. This notebook contains hundreds of records of everything related to the Sheikh’s horses, including: “buying – selling” – Reproduction – Birth”, and complete information on the sources of the horse, as well as the names of sellers and buyers.
The rest of the Tahawiya horses until 2013
Sheikh Al-Tahawy Saud says that Al-Tahawiyah and Arabian horse lovers around the world are in great pain because hundreds of carefully selected and produced thoroughbreds from among the best Arabian Bedouin horses and stalls are most of them extinct.
What remains of the Tahawiyah Thoroughbred horses today are a few (ten mares and horses).
Al-Tahawiyah feels a great responsibility to preserve what remains of those horses, revive their Bedouin breeds, as well as inject new blood into Arab horses around the world.
The originality of the remaining horses
Sheikh “Saud” explains that there are several important observations confirming the authenticity of these horses; As all the mares have reached a large age, some without childbearing, and others have given birth once. This can be proven by signing a medical examination. Which indicates the keenness of the owners on the authenticity of the horse and not to introduce any foreign blood.
In addition, all of the mentioned studs did not own any hybrid horses, neither in the past nor in the present, and they either do not acquire other than the mare to be registered, as in the studs of Sheikh Suleiman and Mayor Shukri, or they acquire horses registered with the Authority, as in the Stud of Sheikh Abdul Sattar, and the Persians Bint Al Hamdania .
Sheikh “Saud” indicates that some of the mares whose mothers are alive, namely (Maysa) bint Falha and (Farida) bint Maisa; Which can prove the parentage of the mother by analyzing the DNA.
There are also some mares from fathers registered with the Commission, namely Bint Dilangat and Bint Al-Hamdaniya; Which can prove parentage to the father by analyzing the DNA.
All horses can confirm their affiliation with the mentioned breeds by analyzing the DNA known as “mitochondrial” and comparing it with mares registered in the organization or Wahoo from the same breed.
Attempts to register Tahawiya horses
Yahya El-Tahawy adds that Sheikh Suleiman Elewa El-Tahawy, one of the chief breeders of horses in the Egyptian country and the dean of the El-Tahawiya families, inherited from his father a large stud that contains many horses and many mares known for their superior production in the race. To register the Tahawiya horses, which were estimated at the time to be about 400-600 of the best horses, but did not receive a response. In 1983, in cooperation with the Belgian researcher “Brend Radke”, he documented his stud and prepared full arbores up to the fifth generation for all his horses and a number of other Tahawiyah horses as a first stage. to sign up.
But all his endeavors failed; This is due to the intransigence of officials and their questioning of the authenticity of the Tahawiyah horses and their denial of the existence of Tahawiya horses among the recorded Egyptian horses, which is contrary to reality and an argument against the Zahra station itself.
The Tahawiya horses are among the horses of Al-Zahra’
Many of the Tahawiya’s horses were among the horses registered with Al-Zahraa and Al-Wahoo.
Most of the racing enthusiasts in Egypt bought their horses from Al-Tahawiya
The Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) used many of these horses in
its programmes. Examples of this are: Nasr – Jamal al-Din – Akram – Shore – Harun.
Among the most famous things that entered into Zahra’s horses were the “Three Tahawiyah Mares”: “Bint Barakat” –
“Fitna” – and “Foula”, which Ahmed Pasha Hamza, founder of Hamdan Stables, bought from Sheikh Abdul Hamid Rajeh Al-Tahawy, and she has a large breed among the horses of Zahra.
Tahawiya horses and the Royal Agricultural Society
Yahya al-Tahawy explains that there are a number of the most famous mare in the history of Egyptian horses at all, which al-Tahawiyah believes are their horses. Western researchers are conducting DNA analysis for a number of Tahawiya horses; To prove Al-Tahawy’s lineage with these mares, it will be announced in due course.
However, the most important thing that has already been proven is the mare “Umm Dalal”, which is the grandmother of “Nazir”, and is present in all Egyptian horses today, through the documents of Lady “Anne Blunt” and her talk about the horse “swimmer”.
He pointed out that researchers in the American Five Organization, who are doing in-depth research into the Bedouin origins of the Arabian horse worldwide, confirmed that the Al-Manaqi, the Sabily Abu Al-Masry “Nafa Al-Saghira” is the same as the “swimmer” horse, Abu “Umm Dalal” mentioned in the documents of Lady Anne Blunt. Also, the Karl Raswan Index confirms the ratio of the small benefit to the Tawhi horse “Sabbah”.
It should be noted that Nafaa al-Saghira is the grandmother of Nazir and the mother of the horse Samhan, and an Egyptian horse is not without her today.
Tahawiya horses around the world
Engineer Yasser El-Tahawy reveals that Tahawiya horses are present in a number of countries, including the mare, “Maloima”, which is a wonderful and exciting story from the stories of the Tahawiyya horses, as it was the first Tahawiyya mare to come out of Egypt and reach the American shore.
She is “Maloma”, born in 1924, Kuhaila Nawaqiah, from Maalouf and Shiha, one of the distinguished racing horses, King Mahmoud al-Mutlaq, where she attracted the attention of the American amateur Mr. Herman Frank, so he extracted the necessary permits and transported her and another horse named “King John” to the United States in the year 1929.
“Maloma” has produced many distinguished horses, and has had a great impact on American Arabian horses, and a large number of world champions have emerged from its lines, including the world champion Marwan Al Shaqab at the present time.
He added that in order for “Maloma” to be recorded in the US registry, Mr. Frank had to bring an original pedigree certificate signed by the producer of the Persians and the sheikh of the Bedouin tribe to which the Persians belonged. Indeed, Mr. Frank returned to Egypt, and obtained a detailed pedigree certificate signed and stamped as follows:-
Producer: Sheikh Abbas Muhammad Majali Al-Tahawy.
The seal of the mayor of the Hanadi tribe: Sheikh Fadgham Rageh Al-Tahawy.
Sheikh Al-Tahawy Saud confirmed that “information” was approved in the American Register, and later in WAHO, and its registration papers stamped with Al-Tahawiya’s seals are still preserved in the archives of the American Register, while the original Arabic copy of the certificate was deposited at the Horse Museum in Lexington.
Marwan Al Shaqab is one of the world champions, who appears in the lineage of the Tahawiyya mare.
The horse Nasr, born 1918:
Engineer Yasser El-Tahawy stated that he was one of the most famous racing horses in the twenties, and that the association used its programs and produced many of the horses mentioned in the book of Dr. Abdel Alim Ashoub and the first record.
He added that it was exported to Tunisia in 1929, after his great fame, and it became the most important founding horse of the Tunisian record, and there is no Tunisian horse today, and among it is the greatest horse in the history of racing, for example, the horse Ismat Ali 1955. Nasr also entered the French record and has a great spread today. around the world.
He explained that Nasr is the horse of Sheikh Muhammad Bey Majali Al-Tahawy from Ghatwan and Al-Saqlawiya Al-Shaifi, both of whom belong to Sheikh Muhammad, and the racing documents prove the lineage of Nasr Al-Tahawi.
The horse Jamal Al-Din
Also, the horse Jamal Al-Din was one of the racing horses, owned by Ahmed Pasha Abul Fotouh, and the association used him in its programs, and he produced many of the association’s horses mentioned in the book of Dr. Abdel Alim Ashoub and first record; Based on the testimony of Sheikh Al-Tahawy Saeed Majali Al-Tahawy, one of the centenarians of the elders of Al-Tahawiya, born around 1905, who witnessed the emergence of the race in Egypt and the establishment of the Royal Agricultural Society. He remembered Nasr, Gamal El-Din and Senor, and gave detailed information about them.
Jamal Al-Din is a brother of the three horses of Ahmed Pasha Hamza, produced by Sheikh Abdul Hamid Rageh Al-Tahawy from Barakat and Kahilah Al Khalawiyah.
